Workshop Description:
Have you ever been unable to transfer your patient to a state hospital because it was full? Or wondered what happens to mentally ill patients in the justice system? Have you been looking for ways to better advocate for patients involved with the justice system? During this workshop, we will define what it means to be competent to stand trial and discuss competency to stand trial evaluation and restoration processes in Dallas County. We will also describe treatment barriers faced by individuals found incompetent to stand trial, and conclude by discussing ways that the general psychiatrists can advocate to improve systems of care for justice-involved individuals.
