Where: Communities Foundation of Texas 5500 Caruth Haven Lane Dallas, Texas 75225
$20 (includes lunch)
Presented by the Grant Halliburton Foundation

What do you do when that sweet, innocent child you once knew turns into a moody, rebellious, unpredictable teenager? Get answers and guidance from the experts at this enlightening half-day conference for parents and people who work with teens.

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

Inside the Teenage Brain: Why They Act That Way Karen Williams, MSSW Rainbow Days. Did you know that the average human brain takes 25 years to mature? Even then, it’s just getting started on the road to real maturity. In this eye-opening presentation based on the latest research of leaders in the field of brain studies, you will learn how the adolescent brain develops and how differently it works during the teen years.

I Hate You! What’s for Dinner? How to Resolve Conflict and Keep the Peace: Kim Humphries, LCSW, ACSW, BCD Kim Humphries and Associates: Melodrama and mixed signals are trademarks of the teenage years—but oh, the strain they put on families! Learn how to tone down the turbulence and tune in to the underlying, unspoken needs of teens, using practical, proven strategies based on years of experience with family counseling, mediation and motivational teaching.

Panel Discussion: What Parents Need to Know A panel of young people talk candidly about their personal experiences with stress, depression, eating disorders, and suicide attempts, as well as the challenges of family, stigma, and finding help during the teenage years.

Bully-Proof! 10 Ways to Protect Teens from the Invisible Assault: Beaux Wellborn, The Bully Suicide Project, and Brooks Gibbs, Author and Teen Life Strategist. An estimated 30 percent of American teens—over 5.7 million—are involved in school bullying as either a bully, a target of teen bullying, or both. And the Internet has helped drive the danger to epidemic levels through cyberbullying. How do you know if your teen is involved? Learn how to recognize the early signs of bullying and 10 critical steps to take to protect your teen.

Decoding Teen Chaos: Is My Kid’s Moodiness Normal? Or Should I Worry About Depression? When to be concerned. How to intervene. Melanie Wells, LPC, LMFT, and Chris Jones, LPC, The Lifeworks Group. Anyone who has spent more than 15 minutes in the company of an adolescent knows that moodiness is inevitable (theirs, not yours!). But how do you distinguish between typical teenage ups and downs and clinical depression—a medical condition that too often goes unrecognized and undiagnosed in this age group? Left untreated, teen depression can have serious long-term and even life-threatening consequences. This presentation provides important information for parents and anyone who works with teens. You will leave the presentation knowing when to be concerned and how to get the help and relief that you and your teen may need.

CEU credits will be available.

Speaker bios:

Brooks Gibbs Author and Teen Life Strategist: Brooks Gibbs is a national bestselling author and youth motivational speaker. For the last decade he has spoken to over 1 million students, hosted radio/tv shows, and been featured as an expert in publications like The Washington Post, Teen People Magazine, Inc. Magazine, and CBS.com. His career as a youth worker started shortly after the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. In the aftermath of that tragedy, Brooks traveled extensively with surviving Columbine students who shared their story of hope to audiences across the USA. Since then, he has been called upon as a counselor and keynote speaker to other schools experiencing tragedy including the Santana High School Shootings in San Diego, and the recent South Hadley High School tragedy in Massachusetts. His latest book entitled LOVE is greater than HATE recently made a TOP 10 list on Amazon.com. “The Top 10 Books to Help Teens.”

Kim Humphries, LCSW, ACSW, BCD Kim Humphries and Associates. A frequent speaker at conferences and retreats, Kim has counseled individuals, couples, teens and families for over 15 years in her private practice. In 2001, she founded Kim Humphries and Associates, which focuses on counseling, family enrichment, team-building, leadership development, coaching, and ministry to clergy and spouses. Committed to serving her community, she has worked within the court system as a facilitator for parents and kids, in addition to serving on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations. She has played a leading role in I AM H·E·R·E, the only coalition in North Texas focused solely on teen and young adult mental health, since its inception in 2009. Kim is a Board Certified Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master of Science in Social Work from University of Texas Arlington. She is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work and a Certified Christian Mediator. In addition, Kim serves as an adjunct professor in the counseling program at Dallas Theological Seminary.

Chris Jones, LPC. Adolescent Specialist. The LifeWorks Group. Though Chris has extensive experience working with people of all ages on a wide variety of issues, he specializes in the most powerful force of nature known to man–the adolescent! A Licensed Professional Counselor, Chris has years of experience working with teens who have adjustment disorders, depression, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder (including kids on parole or probation), and ADHD. He also works well with the frazzled parents of teenagers, couples working out the kinks, and families adjusting to change. In addition to working with clients at the Dallas office of The Lifeworks Group, he also serves as clinical director of the Fort Worth office.

Beaux Wellborn The Bully Suicide Project. Beaux Wellborn has a heart for teens and he puts his heart into every aspect of his work as a volunteer for Youth First Texas and a motivational speaker with Campus Harmony. In 2009, he worked with Campus Harmony to launch the acclaimed Bully Suicide Project, an inspiring project that promotes awareness of and action against the threat of bullying. The project provides education about the lingering after-effects of bullying that can lead to depression, anxiety, and suicide. Through online video interviews, it relates the powerful personal testimonials of scores of people who have been victims and survivors of bullying. The mission of the Bully Suicide Project is to shift the paradigm and change the climate to eliminate bullying in all aspects of life, in all corners of the world, and to prevent the needless suicides that result from bullying behavior. Beaux’s connection to bullying prevention is personal. “I was bullied myself and almost committed suicide,” he says. “As a speaker, I had enough of seeing kids come in beat up or with bruises.” In addition to his work and leadership in bully suicide prevention, Beaux was featured in an episode of MTV’s MADE series, which chronicled his motivational coaching of a teenage girl to overcome her self-defeating behavior and achieve her aspirations.

Melanie Wells, LPC, LMFT. Founder and Director The LifeWorks Group. After eight years in conventional counseling practices, Melanie Wells founded The Lifeworks Group in 2000 to offer clients an innovative approach to the everyday problems of life. She attended SMU on a music scholarship and graduated with an English degree. While earning a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary, she took her first counseling course and was hooked. She later helped to found and develop DTS’s Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling program and taught in the counseling department there. She also holds a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology, specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy, from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, where she also taught as a member of the adjunct faculty. Melanie is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, specializing in “last-ditch” marital cases and working with troubled families (many of whom are dealing with those difficult teenage years), as well as other issues, including spousal abuse, depression, chronic illness, and divorce recovery. In addition to leading The LifeWorks Group, Melanie is the author of several novels, including the Dylan Foster trilogy: When the Day of Evil Comes, The Soul Hunter, and My Soul to Keep.

Karen Williams, MSSW Director of Special Projects Rainbow Days. Karen Williams is a national writer and speaker on child and adolescent brain development and is noted for her ability to explain the latest neuroscience and apply it to real-life situations. Her current focus is on three areas: brain development and behavior; the impact of substances, traumatic stress, and traumatic brain injury on development and behavior; and the developmental readiness of youth to protect themselves. Her presentations provide a fascinating overview of the latest findings on the adolescent brain and behavior, based on the 15-year study by Dr. Jay Giedd (NIH) and Dr. Paul Thompson (UCLA) and on the research of other leaders in the field of brain studies. She is the curriculum developer of Protecting You/Protecting Me, a SAMHSA Model Program based on the latest brain research, and a founding member of Brain Trust Alliance®, which brings together researchers, educators and youth service professionals dedicated to making the latest research accessible to non-researchers. Karen holds a Master of Science in Social Work and is Director of Special Projects for Rainbow Days, Inc.
