How much: The cost of the dinner will be $20 apiece (Tarrant chapter residents eat free). The usual alcoholic beverages available at the restaurant can be purchased separately if desired.

More: Over the last several years, Fort Worth’s own Dr. Ken Hopper has continued to grow his expertise related to models medical business. He will be presenting data that demonstrate trends in the provision and reimbursement of healthcare that are crucial to our understanding of our options for the long-term future. More recently, his interests have taken him into the subject of Medical/Behavioral Integration, a topic with an important role in our professional futures. He is now serving on the APA’s National Workgroup on Medical/Behavioral Integration and will be able to give us an update on this work as well. We anticipate good discussion and good fellowship.

Tarrant Chapter Members only: We hope you have had an opportunity to review the Constitution, Bylaws, and Mission Statements for our organization sent previously. We will be voting by mail soon to adopt these. Officers, we will meet at the restaurant at 5:30, before the meeting, for a planning session and other chapter business. Please try to be there.

 Title:   Crisis Redesign, the recent local and statewide expansion of emergency psychiatric  services.

 Topic:  Psychiatrists Drs. Joe Burkett and Dr. Gary Etter will present an update on the statewide initiative known as Crisis Redesign.  Gary and Joe served on an impressive committee of stakeholders from around the state that met several times in Austin in 2006.  The work of this committee ultimately went forward to the Texas Legislature and was approved to the tune of over $240,000,000 of additional new funding statewide for crisis psychiatric services to be implemented over 2007 to 2011.  A significant portion of that money has landed here in Tarrant County and has added treatment options to the JPS and the MHMR systems.  It is quite a story and it is still unfolding. 

 We will have a catered meal for which we will ask members to pay $12 to cover the costs.   The use of the facility is being made available to us at no charge!   We are looking forward to seeing everyone this month.  Let’s have another great turnout.  The topic is relevant to all of us and is a real success story in public policy and community psychiatry.  We will have a business meeting of the Executive Committee of the Tarrant Chapter of TSPP at 5:30, immediately prior to the meeting for the full membership.

JOURNAL CLUB UPDATE:       Attendance was small, but Drs. Gary Malone and Mustafa Husain (UT Southwestern) conducted a superb discussion about TMS and other somatic therapies as they emerge as to clinical effectiveness and availability.  Please let us know if you would like more journal club formats attempted next year.

January 20, 2009  TARRANT CHAPTER TSPP NOTICE OF CANCELLATION OF JOURNAL CLUB  FOR JANUARY 21ST

Dear Members:

We were saddened today to learn of the passing of Jim Malone, M.D., retired Fort Worth psychiatrist.  We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Mabel, and his sons, Don Malone, M.D., and Gary Malone, M.D., and the Malone family.

Because Gary and Dr. Mustafa Husain of UT Southwestern were to have led our journal club article review and discussion on the subject of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), it was felt best to cancel the program, and an effort will be made to reschedule the event,tentatively on February 18th.

Dr. Jim Malone was a longtime practicing psychiatrist who had an eclectic andpsychodynamic style of practice.  Over the years, he held many leadership positions at several hospitals: St. Joseph’s, All Saints, and Harris among others.  All of us who knew him recall his forthrightness, wisdom, and perceptiveness.

Most of all, Jim envisioned the future growth of Fort Worth and its psychiatric community.  In 1980, he led others to begin a separate local chapter of organized psychiatry in the metroplex, apart from the North Texas Chapter, Dallas.  This became us, the Tarrant Chapter of the TSPP.  Thirty years later, we have 100 members and we are the 5th largest TSPP chapter.  Dr. Jim Malone was our original “Founding Father,” and we will always be grateful to him for that.

The Malone family will receive visitation Friday evening the 22nd, 6 – 8 PM at Greenwood.  Funeral services will be Saturday afternoon the 23rd at 3:30 PM, also at Greenwood.
