Highly recommended by Carolyn Rekedres MD who has participated…

It is once again time to conduct the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance (MDHA) annual homeless count and census. The census is conducted each year in the last week of January so that Dallas and Collin Counties can collect information on homeless residents.

With MDHA’s renewed commitment to end Chronic Homelessness by 2014 and the opening of the Bridge Homeless Assistance Center in May of 2008, the Homeless Count and Census allows us to monitor our progress in achieving this goal. The Census helps us to complete a needs assessment for the community and encourage the development of programs to fill identified gaps. The information compiled during the census is also used by several interested groups, including non-profit organizations, faith-based groups, media outlets and various departments in Federal, State and local government.

Program: Basics of Disaster Psychiatry, the Role of Psychiatrists in Disaster Intervention, and the Medical Reserve Corps

RSVP: Please RSVP if planning to attend to NTSPPrsvp@gmail.com. Cheap to moderate food price and free location depend on number responding.

DETAILS: Learn how you can serve as a volunteer during the next Dallas County public health emergency or mass casualty disaster. Learn WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW to get ready and be prepared to serve your community. The Dallas County Medical Reserve Corps is training volunteers and will be here to explain WHY you are needed and HOW you can get involved in this important public health preparedness program.

The Dallas County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) enlists medical and non-medical volunteers from the community at large. It then trains these volunteers to fill specific roles in both disaster relief shelters and in temporary clinics, or PODs (points-of-dispensing). The psychiatrist’s role in a shelter (such as following Katrina/Rita evacuations in 2005) will be to assist as part of a medical team operating

an on-site medical care unit within each shelter. In addition, MRC training will help prepare the volunteer psychiatrist for assisting with crisis intervention within the POD environment.

For the doctor who wishes to train for a broad leadership role, the MRC offers training as POD Director, Clinic Manager, and other non-medical management job roles.

**Carol North MD MPE is the Dallas County Health & Human Services Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) disaster mental health liaison for MRC Mental Health Units and UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. North holds the Nancy and Ray L. Hunt Chair in Crisis Psychiatry as well as being Director-Program in Trauma and Disaster, Dallas VAMC. She will be accompanied by MRC officials.
